Nuestra esperanza: 1 Juan 4:9-11 / Our Hope 1 John 4:9-11

Leyendo las noticias de España esta semana volví a ver lo mal que está la situación y la poca esperanza que hay en el país. Ya hay una tasa de para de 27,2%  con más de 6 millones de parados, además de un 57% de jóvenes sin empleo.

Por otro lado, estaba terminando un trabajo final para una de mis clases, escatología, y me acordé de la esperanza que tenemos en Jesucristo sin importar lo mal que estén las cosas en el mundo.

Me gusta la definición de escatología de Brian Daley: “Es la esperanza de los creyentes en que el estado incompleto de su experiencia presente con Dios será resuelta, su sed presente será saciada, su necesidad presente de liberación y salvación será satisfecha.”

Como cristianos, tenemos una seguridad firme, probada y validada por la resurrección de Jesús, de que un día estaremos en el Paraíso con Dios. Ésta es la esperanza cristiana.

Podemos descansar en el Señor, esperar y confiar en Él porque Jesús es nuestra roca firme y nuestra única esperanza (Mateo 7:24-27). No construyamos nuestra casa en las arenas movedizas de nuestra sociedad materialista y posmoderna. 

Dios promete en la Biblia salvación para cualquiera que acepte y crea en su hijo Jesucristo. No importa  lo mal que el mundo pueda estar, Dios prometió justificar a todo el que crea en su Hijo. Ésta es la verdadera esperanza.

1 Pedro 1:3-5 nos recuerda de esta esperanza: “¡Alabado sea Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo! Por su gran misericordia nos ha hecho nacer de nuevo mediante la resurrección de Jesucristo  para que tengamos una esperanza viva y recibamos una herencia indestructible, incontaminada e inmarchitable. Tal herencia está reservada en el cielo para vosotros, a quienes el poder de Dios protege mediante la fe hasta que llegue la salvación que se ha de revelar en los últimos tiempos.

Reading the news from Spain this week I was reminded of how bad and hopeless the financial situation is. Spain's jobless rate shot up to a record 27.2%. There are currently more than 6 million people unemployed (the unemployment rate for those under 25 years old is a staggering 57%).

On the other hand, writing the final paper for one of my classes, Eschatology, I was reminded of the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ regardless of how bad the situation gets in the world.

I like Brian Daley’s definition of eschatology: “It is the hope of believing people that the incompleteness of their present experience of God will be resolved, their present thirst for God fulfilled, their present need for release and salvation realized. [...] It is the explication, despite uncertainties, that our choices and patterns of action in this present human life will find lasting relevance in the retribution—for good or ill—administered by a God who is good and wise and powerful.”

We as Christians have a firm assurance, proved and validated by the resurrection of Jesus, that we will one day be in Paradise with God. This is the Christian hope.

We can rest in the Lord, wait for Him, and trust Him because Jesus is our solid rock and only hope (Matthew 7:24-27). Let’s not build our house on the hopeless sands of our current postmodern, materialistic society.

God promises in the Scriptures salvation for anyone who accepts his resurrected Son, Jesus Christ. No matter how bad the world gets, God promised that He would give his imputed righteousness to anyone who believes in his Son. This is true hope.

1 Peter 1:3-5 reminds us of this hope: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Confía en Él...Trust in Him

He estado pensando en España últimamente y en lo mal que está la situación y la economía. La cosa no parece que vaya a mejorar... Fui a un concierto de Phil Wickham el otro día y una de sus canciones dice más o menos lo siguiente:

Los sueños que tenías se han desvanecido, estás cansado y piensas que estás solo,
pero no estás solo.
¿Has oído hablar alguna vez del que puede calmar la tempestad y aliviar al agotado con su amor?
No estás solo.
 En sus brazos estarás seguro. Él prometió que siempre estará contigo, cuando todo se derrumbe a tu alrededor, en sus brazos estarás seguro.
 Sus manos crearon las montañas, calmaron los mares, sostienen los cielos, sanaron al leproso y fueron crucificadas para liberarte.
No estás solo.

Confía en el Señor de todo corazón,
    y no en tu propia inteligencia.
Reconócelo en todos tus caminos,

I've been thinking about Spain lately, about how bad the economy is, how frustrated people are, and all that. It doesn't look like it's going to get any better... I saw Phil Wickham live the other day and one of his songs reminded me of the Spanish people:

To the one whose dreams are falling all apart, and all you're left with is a tired and broken heart,
But you're not alone.
Have you heard of the One who can calm the raging sea with a love so strong and never let you go?
No you're not alone.
You will be safe in His arms. This is the promise He made, He will be with you always. When everything is falling apart you will be safe in His arms.
These are the hands that built the mountains, the hands that calm the sea, these are the arms that hold the heavens, these are the hands that healed the leper, these are the arms that were nailed to a cross to break our chains and set us free.

Me regocijaré en el Señor...I will Rejoice in the Lord

Ésta es la primera vez que escribo en este semestre y ya era hora…

Ya he terminado más de la mitad del primer semestre aquí en el seminario. Por ahora ha sido el mejor semestre de todos los que he hecho. Las clases me encantan y los profesores son increíbles. Ahora estoy haciendo Introducción a la Teología, Hermenéutica, Griego 1, Análisis del Discurso (aunque ésta ya la he terminado gracias a Dios) y una asignatura para estudiantes internacionales.

Estuve pensando hace un tiempo hacer un segundo máster de Estudios Bíblicos a parte del que estoy haciendo para complementarlo, pero he decidido no hacerlo por temas de finanzas. Así que  lo que voy a hacer es tomar unas cuantas clases que no están en mi programa pero que son bastante interesantes.

La gente aquí es genial también. He conocido a bastante gente y hemos hecho un bueno grupo. Aquí os dejo una foto haciendo el tonto del otro día que nos fuimos a la feria de Dallas. En la feria te fríen todo tipo de comida. Las oreos fritas fueron lo mejor!

Lo que estoy aprendiendo aquí no tiene precio. Es bastante duro, sobre todo por la cantidad de lectura que tenemos, pero me está encantando. El aprender griego para poder leer el Antiguo Testamento en el idioma en que fue escrito es lo máximo.

Todavía no he encontrado un trabajo. Seguid orando para que encuentre uno pronto porque aquí la matrícula es carísima. En este tiempo Dios me ha estado enseñando a confiar en Él en temas de finanzas. Pero como dijo Habacuc, me regocijaré en mi Dios sea cual sea la circunstancia y seré fiel aun cuando los tiempos sean inciertos. Os dejo con Habacuc 3:17-18.

Aunque la higuera no dé renuevos,
    ni haya frutos en las vides;
aunque falle la cosecha del olivo,
    y los campos no produzcan alimentos;
aunque en el aprisco no haya ovejas,
    ni ganado alguno en los establos;
 aun así, yo me regocijaré en el Señor,
    ¡me alegraré en Dios, mi libertador!

First update of the semester. I know, it was about time. 

The Fall semester is halfway over. It has probably been my favorite semester in school ever. Classes are amazing and professors are incredibly gifted and intelligent. I am currently taking Introduction to Theology, Hermeneutics, Greek 1, Discourse Analysis (this one is already over), and one class for international students. 

I considered adding a second degree on Biblical Studies to my program but I decided not to do it for financial reasons. I will be taking a couple of extra classes I am interested in instead of doing another whole degree.

People are great here too. We went to the Texas State Fair last weekend. Pretty much all we did was to get fat eating fried stuff. Fired oreos were my favorite by far. Above is a picture of some of the guys from seminary I hang out with. I'm really thankful for them.

Like I said, the stuff I am learning here at DTS is priceless. It’s very challenging but I’m loving it. Getting to learn Greek to read the New Testament in its original language is unreal. I cannot wait to learn more Greek.

I have not found a job yet. Please be praying that I find one soon. God has been teaching me how to trust Him in finances lately. As Habakkuk said, I will rejoice in my God no matter what and I will be faithful even in uncertain times. Here is Habakkuk 3:17-18.

Though the fig tree does not bud
    and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
    and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
    and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
    I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Hace casi un año... Almost a year ago

Hace casi un año empecé el máster en exégesis bíblica y lingüística aquí en Dallas. Ya solo me queda un mes para las vacaciones de verano y para volver a España. La verdad es que ya tengo ganas.

Hace una semana me eligieron como el rey del desfile/cabalgata de la universidad. La reina fue Raquel, mi amiga de Venezuela. Fue una experiencia totalmente americana aunque la realeza era extranjera…

Aquí os dejo una foto. Llevábamos unas pintas… 

 Ahora mismo estoy dando una clase que se llama “Métodos de campo” en la que estoy analizando la gramática y fonología de un idioma de la India que se llama Gujarati que llevo estudiando ya unos tres meses. La clase es muy interesante pero es demasiado estresante porque es un no parar de hacer trabajos de un idioma “raro” que estamos aprendiendo con una chica de la India que se llama Vaibhavi. Aquí tenéis otra foto… la chica de la India es la de negro y las otras dos, Raquel y Colleen, son compañeras de clase.

Hace ya más de un mes me hicieron miembro oficial de Proel, la organización con la que estaré trabajando en África en un futuro. Todavía no tengo mucha información de cómo, cuándo o qué haré pero este verano ya hablaré con ellos cuando esté en España.

Estas últimas semanas también han sido bastante estresantes porque he estado haciendo papeleos para el seminario porque todavía faltaban algunas cosas para que me aceptaran como estudiante y algunas cosas de inmigración para mi visado y todo eso. Ya por fin me han aceptado y me he matriculado para empezar en agosto. La mala noticia es que me comunicaron que no me van a dar beca. Solo pueden dar beca a unos 100 estudiantes internacionales y desgraciadamente no soy uno de ellos. Las cosas así se ponen un poco cuesta arriba porque la matricula, los libros y la vivienda son bastante caros (sobre todo la matricula) pero aquí seguiremos confiando en que Dios proveerá de cualquier manera. Os dejo por hoy con el Salmo 37. ¡Quizás la próxima vez que escriba estaré en España disfrutando del verano!

¹No te impacientes a causa de los malignos
ni tengas envidia de los malhechores,
² porque como la hierba serán pronto cortados
y como la hierba verde se secarán.

³ Confía en Jehová y haz el bien;
habitarás en la tierra y te apacentarás de la verdad.
⁴ Deléitate asimismo en Jehová
y él te concederá las peticiones de tu corazón.

⁵ Encomienda a Jehová tu camino,
confía en él y él hará.
⁶ Exhibirá tu justicia como la luz
y tu derecho como el mediodía.

⁷ Guarda silencio ante Jehová y espera en él.
No te alteres con motivo del que prospera en su camino,
por el hombre que hace lo malo.

⁸ Deja la ira y desecha el enojo;
no te excites en manera alguna a hacer lo malo,
⁹ porque los malignos serán destruidos,
pero los que esperan en Jehová heredarán la tierra,

¹⁰ pues dentro de poco no existirá el malo;
observarás su lugar, y ya no estará allí.
¹¹ Pero los mansos heredarán la tierra
y se recrearán con abundancia de paz.
¹² Maquina el impío contra el justo
y rechina contra él sus dientes.
¹³ El Señor se reirá de él,
porque ve que viene su día.

¹⁴ Los impíos desenvainan espada y tensan su arco
para derribar al pobre y al menesteroso,
para matar a los de recto proceder.
¹⁵ Su espada entrará en su mismo corazón
y su arco será quebrado.

¹⁶ Mejor es lo poco del justo
que las riquezas de muchos pecadores,
¹⁷ porque los brazos de los impíos serán quebrados;
mas el que sostiene a los justos es Jehová.

¹⁸ Conoce Jehová los días de los íntegros
y la heredad de ellos será para siempre.
¹⁹ No serán avergonzados en el tiempo de dificultad,
y en los días de hambre serán saciados.

²⁰ Mas los impíos perecerán,
los enemigos de Jehová serán consumidos;
como la grasa de los carneros,
se disiparán como el humo.

²¹ El impío toma prestado y no paga;
pero el justo tiene misericordia y da.
²² Los benditos de él heredarán la tierra
y los malditos de él serán destruidos.

²³ Por Jehová son ordenados los pasos del hombre
y él aprueba su camino.
²⁴ Cuando el hombre caiga, no quedará postrado,
porque Jehová sostiene su mano.

²⁵ Joven fui y he envejecido,
y no he visto justo desamparado
ni a su descendencia que mendigue pan.
²⁶ En todo tiempo tiene misericordia y presta.
Su descendencia es para bendición.

²⁷ Apártate del mal, haz el bien
y vivirás para siempre,
²⁸ porque Jehová ama la rectitud
y no desampara a sus santos.
Para siempre serán guardados,
mas la descendencia de los impíos será destruida.
²⁹ Los justos heredarán la tierra
y vivirán para siempre en ella.

³⁰ La boca del justo habla sabiduría
y su lengua habla justicia.
³¹ La Ley de su Dios está en su corazón;
por tanto, sus pies no resbalarán.

³² Espía el impío al justo
y procura matarlo.
³³ Jehová no lo dejará en sus manos
ni lo condenará cuando lo juzguen.

³⁴ Espera en Jehová,
guarda su camino,
y él te exaltará para heredar la tierra;
cuando sean destruidos los pecadores, lo verás.

³⁵ Vi yo al impío sumamente enaltecido
y que se extendía como laurel verde.
³⁶ Pero él pasó, y he aquí ya no estaba;
lo busqué, y no lo hallé.

³⁷ Considera al íntegro y mira al justo,
porque hay un final dichoso para el hombre de paz.
³⁸ Mas los transgresores serán todos a una destruidos;
la posteridad de los impíos será extinguida.

³⁹ Pero la salvación de los justos es de Jehová
y él es su fortaleza en el tiempo de angustia.
⁴⁰ Jehová los ayudará y los librará;
los libertará de los impíos y los salvará,
por cuanto en él esperaron.

It was almost a year ago that I moved to Dallas to get my master’s degree in Biblical Exegesis and Linguistics. I only have one month left till I go to Spain for the summer. I can’t wait!

A week ago I was elected as the Homecoming King. The queen was Raquel, a friend from Venezuela. It was such an American experience even though the “royalty” was foreign… (See left picture above)

 I am currently taking a “Field Methods” class in which I have to analyze the grammar and phonology of an Indian language called Guajarati. I have been studying this language for like three months now. The class is really interesting but it is stressing me out because I have to write papers 24/7 about a “strange” language that Vaibhavi, our language consultant from India, is teaching us. She is the one in the black dress in the picture on the right above. The other two girls are Raquel and Colleen, two of my classmates.  

Over a month ago I became an official member of Proel (Wycliffe Spain), the organization I will be working with in Africa in the future. I don’t have any information about how, when or what I will do but I am planning on going to their headquarters in Madrid so that I can talk to them over the summer.

These weeks have also been stressful because I have been doing all the paperwork that DTS needed from me. I still needed to send them some documents and immigration forms to become an official student. After a long process they finally accepted me as an international student! The bad news is that they are not giving me any scholarships. They told they could only support 100 international students and, unfortunately, I am not one of them. Now, things are not looking good for me because tuition, books, and housing are really expensive (especially tuition) but I am still holding on to God’s faithfulness and believing He will provide somehow. Here is Psalm 37. Hopefully next time I update the blog I will be in Spain enjoying the summer!

¹Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
² For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.

³ Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
⁴ Delight yourself also in the Lord,

⁵ Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
⁶ He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,

But the righteous shows mercy and gives.
²² For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,
But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

²³ The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
²⁴ Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old;
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his descendants begging bread.
²⁶ He is ever merciful, and lends;
And his descendants are blessed.

²⁷ Depart from evil, and do good;
And dwell forevermore.

And does not forsake His saints;

³⁴ Wait on the Lord,
And keep His way,

When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power,
And spreading himself like a native green tree.
³⁶ Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

³⁷ Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace.
³⁸ But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;
The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

³⁹ But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in the time of trouble.
⁴⁰ And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;
He shall deliver them from the wicked,
And save them,
Because they trust in Him.
